Page one, number 5 search result of the keyword “Filipina’ in Yahoo will lead you to Merriam and Webster Online Dictionary’s definition of the word - Filipina means a Filipino girl or woman.
In a way, the Internet empowered Filipino women by providing them and the general public with access to information and modern forms of communication. But this same technology has put Filipinas in a disgraceful stature in the World Wide Web.
If we are to search for ‘Filipina’ in Google, Yahoo and other search engines, the first ten websites that would appear include those devoted to mail-order brides, dating and escort services, sexy Filipina images, sex scandals and other sleazy adult websites portraying Filipinas as Asian sex objects. As if adding insult to injury, suggested search keywords further rub in and equate Filipinas to “sex for sale,” “celebrity scandals”, Filipina dating, singles, brides and galleries of nude Filipina girls.
When you ‘Google’ Filipina, the first result that will come up is the Filipina Exposed: Famous Filipina in their Exposed Photos and Videos. The site’s title itself gives away the kind of content and depiction of Filipino women in the Internet. Search engine Gigablast cites Marian Rivera and KC Concepcion as the sexiest Pinays and in YouTube, viewers will be presented with a slideshow of contemporary Pinay celebrities. Searching for photos is even more enraging. The results that will appear seemed as if the images came straight from a porn site.
There are many concerned netizens, particularly bloggers with advocacies aimed to change that sad reality. Through their own little ways, they are working hard to change the Filipina’s image on the Internet.

Using Google bombing as a tool, the campaign aims to “take back the word Filipina online from its massive “dating and penpal websites” and put this word in a more balanced context.”
