Finally! I’ve made up my mind! (Not Really!)

O-kay. This is starting to read like a personal “thinking-out-loud” diary of mine. Anyway, as we all know, everyone is facing financial difficulties because of the current crisis. With that in hand, consumers are thinking not twice but more than thrice on the things they are spending on.

In a forecast here in the Philippines, Labor Secretary Roque estimated that around 300,000 people might lose their jobs. That is not a small number as this would have a domino effect in the country.

Anyway, going back to my main purpose in writing this, I was again, pondering last night on why I wanted to buy an iPhone. If you’ve read my previous blog about it, you can see that my direction is towards the iPhone. Now, it’s going away from it. An iPhone costs 30,000 pesos and it is equivalent to 3 months salary (average) of the people here in the Philippines.

I wanted the iPhone because I don’t want to lug around a lot of gadgets. The problem is, I am not excited about the idea that I have to use my finger to send SMS. It’s pretty difficult. It’s not like I am a text addict but, I wanted to spend something that won’t make my life harder. I know you get what I mean.

So, what would a movie addict want to buy then? It narrows down to:
1. Apple iPod Touch

2. Apple iPod Nano
http://www.megaleecher.net/uploads/ipod-nano-chromatic.png
3. Apple iPod Video
http://ubageek.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/ipod-video.jpg
4. Microsoft Zune
http://www.reviewzine.com/images/mp3player/microsoft-zune.jpg
5. Archos
http://www.letsgodigital.org/images/artikelen/235/archos_604_video_player_zoom.jpg

So much for narrowing it down but at least, they are all personal media players (PMP).

Here are the top things to consider when purchasing a PMP:
1. Battery Life
What would a PMP be used for if it can only play 3 hours of movie? That’s pretty useless!

2. User-friendliness
One thing I hate about iPod products is the hassle of converting videos for it to be played and the use of iTunes to add music to the library. For iPod users, try YAMWIN. It’s a program for iPod’s so you can easuly drag and drop music files to it.

3. Size
No further explanation needed. That is what the first P in PMP stands for — Portable!

Now, after buying a PMP, I need to decide which mobile phone I will buy.

***I sold ALL my old phones to help raise funds for my new gadgets. What I am using now is my trusty ol’ Sony Ericsson p910i and Nokia 6300. Both works flawlessly unlike my M600i and P990i –those 2 are crappy phones!

To get an iPod Nano or what? I don’t know!

http://images.appleinsider.com/timecapsule1unbox-1.jpg
Okay, after craving for a time capsule (1TB) from Apple, I am now craving for an iPod. I never had actually owned one before. I only borrow from my friends. I’m such a loser in that department!

Now, hating all the CD’s in my car with uh, an I don’t know, 6-disc ghetto cd changer, I am now looking forward for a MP3 library in my ride.

Anyway, I am having trouble deciding on what to buy.

Should I get this pretty attractive newly released iPod Nano 4th gen chromatic?
http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/3958/nanoyb3.jpg

or an iPod touch because of the convenience of watching in a bigger screen with Wi-Fi?
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/1016/touchyu2.jpg

or an iPhone -complete package with videos/mp3s/ phone in one?
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/5929/iphonesg2.jpg

You may ask me, what do I really need. Here is the Scenario. I have the following portable gadgets right now:
Sony Ericsson P990i (personal use) and Sony Ericsson P910i (internet browsing)
The image “http://www.mobiletracker.net/live-reports/ces-2006/sony-ericsson-p990i/photos/full/p990i-3.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Sony Ericsson M600i (collecting dust in the cabinet)

iPod Mini green 4gb(Not mine, borrowed from someone who doesn’t use it anymore)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/Green_iPod_mini-2007-02-12.jpg

and a Nokia 6300 (for business use)
The image “http://handcellphone.com/wp-content/themes/green-marinee/phonepic/Nokia-6300-cell-phone-beijing-show-2.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I cannot sell all of those except for the Sony Ericsson M600i. The others was either given to me or subsidized (I paid a percentage. something like 50/50)

Now, the ulitmate question still remains unanswered. What gadget do you recommend for me to buy? This will be my first Apple product purchase if ever.

Top 2007 Gadgets

Apple iPhone

A tad overrated but the phenomena this device has created and will continue to create come 2008, no mobile phone in history will ever claim the same.

Olympus mju 790sw

Shockproof. Waterproof. Freezeproof. If these features don’t convince you to buy this Olympus model then we don’t know what will.

Intel Core 2 Quad

We love the multicore technology—All that power, all that speed. This is absolutely the best time to buy a computer—With Intel inside, of course.

Nokia N95

If BMW is the ultimate driving machine, then the Nokia N95 is probably the ultimate mobile phone. The new 8GB version made it even better.

Hitachi DeskStar 7k1000

Reaching the one-terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) hard disk space in a single drive is purely a psychological breakthrough. We’ve been expecting it and Hitachi did it first in early 2007.

Deciding what to buy. p990i or the p1i?

The chart above simply shows the difference of p990i and the p1i. although there is only a small difference, the price difference is huge.
the p1i sells for around 25,000pesos while the p990i around 14,000pesos.
the only difference I see that matters (of course, except for the looks.) is the ram memory and flash memory. it doubled compared to the p990i.
another good thing i consider is, the p990i uses memory stick pro duo, which is a lot cheaper compared to the m2 memory stick.
As some of you have noticed, I already owned a p990i a few months back. You might wonder why I would like to purchase another p990i after my bad experience with my first p990i. this is my reason, for me, its one of the most complete in features and cheapest one in the market.
so im willing to take another risk.
im going to write a review after I buy this phone next week. hopefuly, it will be a good one already…

Nokia 9300i review

Just last saturday, i bought a new phone to change my old p910i. I bought a new Nokia 9300i. I will make my own review of it. I did not research before buying because this is the only phone i wanted until now and im not regreting it.
Phone Design:
- Very elegant dark colored communicator. Makes you feel like a real businessman in case you are not one.
- Small and compact compared to the Nokia 9500. Width of the P910i is more wider so this is better for me.
- Very user friendly keypad / qwerty keyboard design
Phone Features ( for more detailed features, check it out at www.yehey.com/gadgets )
- User friendly “enough” If you are used to using communicators like me (e.g. Nokia 9210, 9210i, 9300, and 9500),  this is basically the same. Ive owned all communicators except the oldest one, the Nokia 9110.
- If you know what 3rd party applications to install, everything is just one touch. (e.g. when i will sms my dad, i will just press “chr+d”, it will automatically create an empty sms message containing my dads number so all you have to do is type away your message and just send.
- Clear Lcd, good colors
- Loud enough earpiece/ speakers
- Not slow compared to P990i of Sony Ericsson
Whats not…?
- Slow webpage opening. i use my phones for browsing also you know. but what do you expect? this is not a laptop.
- No camera
- Quite larger than normal mobile phones but small enough in terms of communicators/pda phones.
Overall…
- A good switch from my previous phone, P910i. worth it at the side of low 5 digits.
Questions? feel free to post.
Tomorrow, i will write about my new M600i

Tips when buying p990i in the Philippines

Dont buy sony ericsson P990i with swisscom marks. when buying, turn on the phone, if you see swisscom or any other swisscom related markings, dont buy it. it doesnt work well in the Philippines. my friend bought one a few weeks ago, the mother board was defective!!! the seller didnt do anything about it. so better be safe.
another thing, test all networks in it. (if it is not network locked.) because in that swisscom phone, Sun cellular wont work.
another problem, the flash of the camera at the back was always turned on!!! so, if you still want to buy swisscom marked p990i’s in the Philippines, go ahead.
