Notebook sales higher than PC sales for the first time

According to AFP,

NEW YORK — Quarterly sales of notebook computers have topped those of desktop computers for the first time ever in the United States, market intelligence firm IDC reported on Wednesday.

IDC said notebook sales made up 55.2 percent of computer sales in the July to September quarter, 18 percent growth over the same period last year and the first time they have surpassed 50 percent.

I guess everyone else thinks the same way now. A few years back when I invested in a Compaq Laptop (which was a lemon, by the way), many people asked me why I bought that gadget. They said that I could’ve bought a high end PC with top of the line specs and equipments. I bought it around 80,000 pesos or $1,660 US dollars.

The image “http://bizsupport.austin.hp.com/bc/images/support/productInfo/SupportProductImage/pic23795/pic23795.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I bought it because I want a portable computer. It was a 14″ laptop and at that time, that is already portable enough. Now, with UMPC’s and 8 to 10 inchers being released like candies and the economic crisis hitting the world like this, consumers would actually want to buy the most cost efficient gadget. Why would I say that notebooks are more cost efficient? It’s simply because you can bring them everywhere you want! You can use it at home and in the office. You can even use it as a form of media player with multiple formats possible.

Of course, if talking about the effectivity, PC would be the more effective one as you cannot compare the hardware specs of PC and laptops. For gaming, there are gaming laptops available but nothing beats a top of the line PC for gaming.

Right now, I’m using a Twinhead laptop for almost 2 years….everyday! I love the speed and its’ capabilties.

If ever next time, I’m going to purchase a new notebook, it would be…

3 most awaited games this second half of 2008

A month or two ago, I’ve been excitdely waiting for the release of the Red Alert 3 as I’ve been a Red Alert junky ever since I was a kid. It’s now actually 11 days from release and my excitement level had become lesser and lesser because there are some other games I love that would be soon releasing new versions too.

Check out my 3 most awaited games to be released soon…

3. Red Alert 3

2. Need for Speed - Undercover

1. Fallout 3
Although I’ve only played one fallout version, this won’t stop me from waiting the release of the newest fallout 3. The trailer video is entertaining and ghetto enough to let my anticipation level soar!

Check out the video below…

Looks like I will be needing to reformat and upgrade my PC to accomodate these games because currently, my PC is soley for Grand Thef Auto: San Andreas only and I use my laptop for work.

Oh yea… How could I forget the new Grand Theft Auto IV? So that adds another one to my most awaited list. Maybe it’s time to also upgrade my laptop who can’t even play GTA:San Andreas.

No, it’s not a ghetto lappy.

These are the specs of my laptop and I won’t disclose the brand. I will give you a chance to guess it.
Intel Core 2 Duo
Wi-fi
Bluetooth
3 USB ports
Multi-card reader
Supermulti-drive
latchless
12 incher
Sata HDD 80gb
945GM chipset

Work wise, this laptop performs at par. Game wise, this laptop sucks because I can’t understand why I can’t even play Red Alert 2 here.

What’s the best-selling notebook computer on Amazon.com?

The image “http://38one.com/logos/amazon.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

If you guessed the new MacBook Air, guess again.

Five of the 10 best-selling notebooks, including the top three models this weekend do not run Windows or Mac OS X. In fact, they are different models of the same dimunitive notebook the Asus Eee PC—that runs on Linux.

The signifiance of this development is easy to miss, particularly if you have your head buried in the Windows or Mac OS X world. (The other five models on Amazon’s list over the weekend were versions of the MacBook; there were no Windows machines in the top 10.) For the first time, a Linux-based consumer product is making waves, not just among geeks but among buyers.

Measuring only 6.5 by 9 inches, about an inch thick and weighing less than a kilo, the Asus Eee PC is an ultraportable in every sense of the word. Its tiny 7-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally) is matched by a small keyboard that touch-typists with big fingers will find challenging. After playing with it for one morning, however, I quickly learned to adjust to the smaller keys and was able to hammer out this column on it without too many visits to the Back Space key.

The Asus Eee-PC uses a 900-MHz Intel Celeron mobile processor and comes with 512MB or RAM and 4 gigaybtes of storage. It doesn’t have a hard disk, using flash memory instead to hold its operating system, programs and data. This makes the device lighter and more resistant to shocks, since there are no moving parts.

The device, which lists at P19,800, includes built-in Wi-Fi support, a Web cam, a serial port to connect an external monitor, a slot for reading MMC and SD cards, three USB ports, an Ethernet port and a modem port.

Battery life was decent about two hours and 45 minutes on one full charge during my tests.

Apple and the world’s thinnest laptop - The Macbook air laptop computer.

Photo

Image from: WIRED

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple chief executive Steve Jobs on Tuesday unveiled an ultra-slim MacBook Air laptop computer that he billed as the world’s leanest laptop.

In trademark theatrical style at the Macworld Expo opening in San Francisco, Jobs slid the laptop from a brown envelope typically used for inter-office mail.

A packed audience of notoriously cultish “Macintosh faithful” whistled, hooted and cheered.

“It’s the world’s thinnest notebook (computer),” Jobs said with a smile. “We went out and looked at all the thin notebooks out there and tried to distill a best-of-breed.”

MacBook Air is a lean wedge-shape, .16 inches thin at the front and .76 inches thick at the rear. Jobs compared it to some of the market’s thinnest laptops measuring .8 inches at one end and 1.2 inches at the other.

World-leading computer chip maker Intel shrunk one of its fast dual-core processors by 60 percent at Apple’s urging to fit the power into MacBook Air, according to Jobs.

“When we started this project we didn’t think it was possible,” Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said, briefly joining Jobs on stage.

“There were times we sweated over it, but at the end of the day we innovated.”

Macintosh computers sales have surged due to what analysts describe as a “halo effect” from the company’s trendy iPod and iPhone models. Apple has been aggressively trying to capitalize on the company’s cache.’

Apple has shipped more than five million copies of its new Leopard operating system for Macintosh computers since it launched in late October, according to Jobs.

“The MacBook Air could kick-start the ultra-portable laptop market,” Bajarin said, noting that laptop models already constitute nearly half of Apple’s flourishing Macintosh computer sales.

“The Air will be a big hit with the Mac faithful but also be something that attracts PC users.”

Jobs pointed out that the lean laptops have easily recyclable aluminum casing and electronic components made from non-hazardous materials.

The segue was an effort to polish Apple’s dim reputation among environmentalists who accuse the company of falling short when it comes to recycling used electronics and using Earth-friendly materials.

MacBook Air features innovations inspired by Apple’s iPods and iPhone, according to Jobs.

For example, the compact hard drives in the laptops are the kind used in iPods, while touch pad controls in the computers mimic touch-screen “gesture” capabilities in iPhones.

“We learned from the iPhone and put it in our other computers,” Jobs said.

MacBook Air notebooks weigh three pounds and have battery life of five hours. The ultra-lean laptops are priced at 1,799 dollars and will begin shipping in two weeks, Jobs said.

Hard drives will be checked at airports?

http://images1.comstock.com/Imagewarehouse/PR/SITECS/NLWMCompingVersions/0087000/87000-87499/PR87339.JPG

Will Hard drives be checked in airports?

Dont we have privacy anymore? are they protecting the citizens from terrorists or invading our privacy?

Here is an interesting article from NYTIMES (Read the complete article here)

A couple of years ago, Michael T. Arnold landed at the Los Angeles International Airport after a 20-hour flight from the Philippines. He had his laptop with him, and a customs officer took a look at what was on his hard drive. Clicking on folders called “Kodak pictures” and “Kodak memories,” the officer found child pornography.

The search was not unusual: the government contends that it is perfectly free to inspect every laptop that enters the country, whether or not there is anything suspicious about the computer or its owner. Rummaging through a computer’s hard drive, the government says, is no different than looking through a suitcase.

One federal appeals court has agreed, and a second seems ready to follow suit.

There is one lonely voice on the other side. In 2006, Judge Dean D. Pregerson of Federal District Court in Los Angeles suppressed the evidence against Mr. Arnold.

“Electronic storage devices function as an extension of our own memory,” Judge Pregerson wrote, in explaining why the government should not be allowed to inspect them without cause. “They are capable of storing our thoughts, ranging from the most whimsical to the most profound.”

Computer hard drives can include, Judge Pregerson continued, diaries, letters, medical information, financial records, trade secrets, attorney-client materials and — the clincher, of course — information about reporters’ “confidential sources and story leads.”

But Judge Pregerson’s decision seems to be headed for reversal. The three judges who heard the arguments in October in the appeal of his decision seemed persuaded that a computer is just a container and deserves no special protection from searches at the border. The same information in hard-copy form, their questions suggested, would doubtless be subject to search.

==========================================================

Should we be scared? They are inspecting everything! even files!!! I already feel offended when they let you remove your belt and shoes. and now, they are going to scan files also?

tsktsktsk…

HD in a Toshiba laptop

Toshiba unveiled its latest HD-DVD integrated notebooks, the Satellite A200, as the Japanese computer maker’s latest innovation to its line-up of notebooks. The Toshiba Satellite A200 is now equipped with HD-DVD, the latest in high definition video playback technology, which offers 6 times more than the resolution of the conventional DVD.

In addition to the image-enhancing capability of HD-DVD, developed by Toshiba and NEC, the video format also features advanced sound technology such as Dolby Digital Plus and HDi technology for an interactive experience, allowing users to access menus and watch behind the scenes while the movie is playing.

“HDTVs have become increasingly popular, so the new high-definition Satellite A200 with HD DVD-ROM is an ideal machine for consumers who use their notebooks as an entertainment device,” said Wong Wai Meng, senior deputy manager of product marketing for Toshiba’s Computer Systems Division.
