USB Wireless Broadband Router

Just want to make a post about this gadget — Windy31.

I am currently in Tagaytay and our house here is, of course, not wifi enabled because I am no eccentric rich human being that can afford to have a broadband connection here where, I go roughly just ten times a year.

So, using my Globe Visibility mobile broadband, I combo it with my windy31 USB wireless broadband router and VOILA! Our entire house is now WiFi enabled!

Currently, this is my Globe Visibility speed (Jan 31, 2009) at Tagaytay.

3 laptops running, all browsing the net without delay and lag.

I am so happy with that device!

Globe Visibility ZTE mf626 USB broadband modem Problem

I’ve been using AVG for some time now. Last night, I had a problem with it. It has a conflict with several SD card readers and most importantly, my Globe Visibility modem.

My Huawei e220 Globe Visibility modem gave up on me just last week so this pushed me to purchase a new one. Good thing, it is still on promo. I got my new modem which is the ZTE mf626. I tried it out immediately to see if there is any speed difference. Up to know, I haven’t noticed any speed/ Signal problems with it versus my old Huawei e220.

Back to my problem last night. Here is the scenario. I plug in my ZTE mf626 after turning on the computer and connect the modem. No problems there. The problem comes when you disconnect the ZTE mf626. You cannot disconnect it properly because there is no safe to remove module on the task bar. You have no choice but to unplug it without safely removing it. If you plan on using the modem again, you need to restart your computer/ laptop because it wouldn’t detect the mf626 modem anymore!

I’ve searched (and became a geek for 30 minutes) and found out that in the memory of the computer, the usb is still attached. There is still an instance running for the device id. After more searches, I discovered that AVG is conflicting with devices such as SD card readers and this particular modem, the ZTE mf626.

Now, I uninstalled AVG and I am trying out Avira Antivir personal free anti-virus. I will update this blog as soon as I find out if this really works.

I hope I can find a work around for this because it is simply to hassle to restart your system everytime you disconnect the broadband modem from your unit.

New gadget sighting: USB Wireless Router

Wow, a few weeks back when I made my Christmas wishlist, this particular gadget was on the list. Now, it’s available in the Philippines already!!!

I just saw it in http://cheftonio.blogspot.com/2008/11/perfect-christmas-gift-for-those-people.html

The image “http://images.alvinquachua.multiply.com/image/5/photos/123/500x500/7/a7.JPG?et=MIC2UsEoqtOJewNF8MynEQ&nmid=139047303” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I already am ready to purchase this whatever the cost is (of course reasonable, it must be).

Now, I can share my Globe visibility connection! share and spread the globe lovin’ :)

Sun Cellular now offering mobile broadband internet!

http://www.txtfire.net/Sun_Logo%5B1%5D.JPG
Sun Broadband internet

According to the flyer I received, this broadband can reach GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA speeds within METRO MANILA only as of now. Like other telcos offering broadband, there is no need for phone lines and this plan already comes with a USB modem (plug and play)

Minimum Requirements are:
- Pentium 4, 1Ghz or higher
- USB 2.0 full speed
- Windows 2000, XP, Vista or Mac OS
- 50MB free hard disk space
- 128MB RAM or higher

Application Requirements are:
- Application form
- One Valid ID
- Competitor proof of billing/ Proof of income

Now, here are their rates:

Sun Broadband plan 500

- Monthly service fee Php500.00
- One time charge of Php2,000.00
- MAX speed: 280 Kbps
- Free monthly usage: 35 hours
- Rate in excess of free monthly usage - Php 0.30 cents per minute

Sun Broadband plan 1000

- Monthly service fee Php1,000.00
- One time charge of Php2.000.00
- MAX speed: 560 Kbps
- Free monthly usage: 75 hours
- Rate in excess of free monthly usage - Php 0.30 cents per minute

I wonder if this is a good alternative for Globe Visibility users or We Roam users signal wise around Metro Manila? I repeat that this service is ONLY INITIALLY GOOD AROUND METRO MANILA. So those who often go to other regions, this might be rather useless for you and your laptops.

More fixed rate for mobile browsing, please!

According to Andre Levisse, of management consulting firm McKinsey and Company, Flat rates for data are becoming increasingly common, and mobile devices for accessing Internet content are more widely available.

“It becomes cheaper and cheaper to just get one megabyte of data and that enables, probably, some change in the user behaviour,” he said during a panel discussion at the start of the CommunicAsia conference in Singapore.

The event bills itself as the region’s leading information and communications technology conference and exhibition.

Richard Tan, business director of Telkomsel Indonesia, agreed data plan prices have been dropping.

“I think connectivity is now more affordable,” Tan said.

Internet-capable handsets have also become cheaper.

“Many people can afford good handsets that can really browse the Web,” said Levisse, adding that even second-hand 3G models are now available in the region.

On the eve of the conference, Finnish telecom giant Nokia launched two new email-capable handsets for business users, and South Korea’s Samsung unveiled its latest smart phone, a touch-screen model.

=Source: Lower costs draws people to mobile internet

In the Philippines, telco’s charge around 10 pesos per 30 minutes. That’s like 160 pesos for a normal 8 hour work day. It would equate to around 800 pesos a week and 2,400 pesos a month compared to what I am subscribed to now. I just want to thank globe for providing fast and reliable connection for the past few months.

I really do not have an idea how much globe visibility would cost now but, the speed is worth it.

May 22 2007 review of Globe telecoms Globe Visibility!

Did you read my former reviews about Globe Visibility? The “better than 3g” HSDPA connection?
well, forget that. here is my latest review!
From Manila to Tagaytay, no cut connection but, take note. GPRS SPEED ONLY! compared to last months connection of HSDPA/UMTS.
For some who doesnt know the difference, GPRS is around 54kbps, UMTS is around 300 to 400kbps and HSDPA is around 1mbps to max of 1.8 MBPS.
See the difference???
i work from a single location since i started using visibility. at first, it was ok. HSDPA/UMTS speed. but now! GPRS speed!!!! not only that, sometimes it doesnt receive data!!!
Globe! do something!!! this is just my start! if you dont refund to us 1 month worth or at least, do something about it, this will spread.
i subscribed because i want the HSDPA or at least UMTS speed. not gprs!!!
2000 pesos per month for 54kbps???? sooo not worth it!!!!! dont subscribe first guys. lets see if they do something about this. this is my first post. everyday, i will post. i have multiple blogs, forums, connection accounts. word of mouth is more effective than commercial that costs millions.

Being visible…

Right now, I just tested my globe HSDPA speed and it seems to be constant.
the other night, this was my speed.
pretty constant if you might ask me. I really hope this doesnt change.
From Manila to Tagaytay, my internet connection did not get disconnected. i only experienced gprs or slow connection in about 3 or 4 locations. the rest was using umts or hsdpa. This is so worth my 2k bucks per month already. the convinience of having an internet connection along whereever you go is really priceless for me.
i wonder if pldt we-roam has the same service. i heard pldt we-roam is not good. any pldt we-roam admins? want me to test your service? kidding. anyway, if you are having second thoughts on what to get for your internet-everywhere service, id advice you to get globe visibility. ive tested it and im contented. you can also get the pldt we-roam and tell me about it.
by the way, gprs download speed is about 40 to 50 kbps. im not sure about umts but gprs reached 1.7mbps
