MANILA, Philippines -- Can the Ninoy Aquino International Airport accommodate and adequately service a passenger aircraft which is as tall as an eight-story building and has a wingspan almost as wide as a football field?

This will be known on Thursday when the Airbus-380, the world’s largest passenger jet, arrives at the NAIA as part of its three-country Asia-Pacific leg of its “route proving flight.”

The double-decker Airbus A-380 MSN 009 test aircraft is expected to land at the NAIA at around 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

Flight range comparison with other aircraft

• Airbus A380F has a flight range of 10,400 km (5,616 nmi) with 152 metric tonnes (168 S/T/150 L/T) of cargo.
• C-5 Galaxy has a flight range of 3,982 km (2,150 nmi) with 122 metric tonnes (134 S/T/120 L/T) of cargo. An-124 has 32% longer range.
• Boeing 747-400 has a range of 8,240 km (4,449 nmi) with 113 metric tonnes (125 S/T/111 L/T) of cargo, 39% more than An-124 and 79% more than the C-5 Galaxy.
• Il-96-400T has a range of 4,800 km (2,592 nmi) with 92 metric tonnes (101 S/T/91 L/T) of cargo. An-124 has 56% more range. However with 40 metric tonnes (44 S/T/39 L/T) of cargo both An-124 and Il-96-400T have the same range: 11,500 km (6,210 nmi).

The US Air Force’s Lockheed C-5 Galaxy transport aircraft touched down in Manila during President George W. Bush’s visit in Manila four years ago. Russia’s Antonov AN-225 had landed several times at the NAIA.

From there, you can compare how titanic those US Air Force’s Lockheed C-5 Galaxy transport aircraft and Russia’s Antonov AN-225 are compared to the Philippine Airlines B-747. Now, the Airbus a380 wont be as big as those two.
